Basavanagudi Nandi Temple is also known as ‘Nandi Temple’ or ‘Dodda Basavana Gudi’ Temple. Basavanagudi Nandi Temple or as we know Bull Temple in Basavangudi is famous for its large nandi statue in temple premise. The statue has been made out of a single granite stone which is grey in color.

Basavanagudi Nandi Temple  which is also known as Bull temple is open through out the day.  Bull temple Basavanagudi timings are 6 hour in the morning and approx 5 hours in the evening. The temple opens around 6 AM in the morning and closed by 12 Afternoon. Again it opens around 5:50 PM in the evening and then closed around 9PM in the night. The majority of footfall is seen in the morning as people come to worship in the temple in morning between 6 AM to afternoon 12 PM.

Who built Bull Temple(Basavanagudi Nandi temple)?

Basavanagudi Nandi temple was built by Kempe Gowda in the yeat 1537. At the time of Kempe Gowda existed ,Vijaya nagara empire was in existence. So the bull temple architecture is similar to that generation. A nandi came to Kempe Gowda dreams and thats why he build Nandi Temple on the Hill. There is also Ganesha temple and lord Siva temple on the hills

Why Basavanagudi Nandi temple was built?

According to some folklore Bull Temple was built to please a bull which created havoc in the nearby farming region. It is said that there was a bull who used to destroy the farm produce. People were in a lot of sorrow. So they decided to build a statue of Nandi God so that they can please her. Surprisingly building a bull statue stopped the rampage and destruction that was once regularly done by the bull. People were surprised that the bull actually stopped destroying there field. It was an act of faith that came true. After that the temple became very famous and every year there is a festival that takes place in nearby region. That festival is known as Kadalekai Parase. It is very popular amongst the local people. This festival happens during November and December. The local farmers offer first harvet to Nandi temple or Bull temple as we say.

An Alternate story

It is said around 500 years back when the cheif produce in this region was groundnut. The people of the village noticed that every full moon the groundnut produce of entire village used to get missing. The villages thought somebody is stealing there groundnut produce but actually it was a bull. It is said that people saw a bull which was golden in color who used to consume the entire groundnut produce. It is said that after some time there was a bull statue that mysteriously appeared on the hill. Once the statue appeared there was no more theft of groundnut.
